In Caterpillars, we use carefully planned topics to guide children’s learning and ensure they develop important skills and knowledge across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. These topics provide a rich and engaging framework for introducing key concepts in communication, language, literacy, maths, and the wider world. However, we know that young children learn best when they are interested and motivated—so while our topics shape the learning journey, we remain flexible and responsive to the children’s own ideas and interests. By following their lead, we create meaningful learning experiences that build on what excites and inspires them, helping to nurture curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
